So.

As some may have noticed (or not),I love making theories. Whether crack or not,I really, really like making them.

So I'll just be having this "Theories" segment in order to get me thinking and on the go :3

So for this one,we'll be discussing the death of James "Jim" Moriarty from Sherlock...or is he dead?

For those who don't watch Sherlock,I'll fill you in.

Season 2,Episode 3,"The Reichenbach Fall",Moriarty forces Sherlock to jump off the top of St. Bart's Hospital or else they'll get killed by Moriarty's snipers. However,Sherlock states that since Moriarty is alive,he still has a chance to save his friends, although small.

Moriarty then realizes, and with a smile that looks...genuine,to say the least, puts his gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger.

Sherlock looks shocked, and since he has no other choice, jumps off the rooftop.

Now to Season 3,Episode 1,"The Empty Hearse". Sherlock is actually alive and faked his death. But for the whole of Season 3,we're wondering if Moriarty will actually appear, until Episode 3,"His Last Vow".

A GIF of Moriarty pops up on every screen in Britain, with an audio of "Did you miss me?" being repeated.

So that's basically the situation. I have a lot of questions, and some probable answers,so let's get to the theories!

1) Moriarty wasn't the one who died on that rooftop

In the original Sherlock books,Moriarty has two other brothers. One is a stationmaster, and I forgot who the other was supposed to be,but...*shrug*

Since Mycroft and Sherlock were born in the same family,we know that those two other brothers are probably as smart as Moriarty, but maybe not evil. Moriarty would've taken advantage of it,and used the most timid or easily scared of the two,and made him shoot himself on that rooftop.

It would be easy. Moriarty could, say, use plastic surgery for that brother in order for him to look like Moriarty,or make-up. There's also a chance that, since there are three of them, that they would be triplets, therefore no need of plastic surgery or make-up.

Heck,it'd be even easier to make one of them go onto that rooftop if he wasn't as smart as Moriarty. Evidence to back this up?

If you re-watch that whole scene again, you'll notice that Moriarty suddenly goes into an American accent for no apparent reason, though maybe that's because Andrew Scott went ahead and did that for no particular reason, but still.

Now,here's another theory. If Moriarty went into an American accent for no reason, then someone must be acting as him. He could've grabbed some random person on the street that looked like him and threatened them to do it,and if they didn't,he would kill their family.

I'd say that the best chances for my theories to be true would be this one, because the writers stick to canon most of the time. Well, except for The Great Game, which was mostly original, but there were still references to the books here and there.

2) Moriarty Survived The Gunshot

Now,I know that people will say that the chances are unlikely, but I actually got off my lazy ass and decided to research.

"It would seem an immensely improbable thing that someone could survive a gunshot wound to the head. But many people do survive, and a lot of what doctors know about how to deal with damage to the brain has come from working on people who have survived this sort of injury."

"The major reasons for fatalities are really to do with the fact that the brain lives inside a confined box called the skull and, if pressure increases within that confined box, that's what's going to really lead to death."

There you have it. The brain swells when it gets shot,so if it doesn't...well,get enough space, the poor person's going to die. And that's the real reason for death. Gunshot debris will of course have to be removed, part of the skull may have to be removed as well.

"
The main cause of death at the scene of a gunshot wound is usually blood loss – if a bullet goes through important blood vessels and there is not enough time to stop the resulting bleeding, for example."

Ah,blood loss. Blood loss seems to be an important factor in this, because by the time Sherlock takes a glance at Moriarty's corpse,he's bleeding. A lot.

"
If the victim survives the initial blood loss, the problem then becomes the increasing pressure inside the skull. "The blood supply to the brain reduces but also the blood which is coming out of the vessels causes pressure within this confined space of the skull," said Husain. "And, if the bullet itself goes through the brain structure, there is a massive inflammatory reaction, so you get a lot of swelling in the brain and that's another big cause for death." "

I'm predicting that Moriarty would've died in at least 10 minutes because of blood loss. A precious minute or two was taken because of Sherlock not falling yet. Add that you need time to get to the rooftop and to get Moriarty to a hospital and NOT St. Bart's Hospital,it means that he's bound to die.

Which leads to a theory that Molly helped Moriarty faked his death. Yes,he is James "Jim" Moriarty. But they dated before and he was such a sweet guy, wasn't he? She can't help but feel bad for him, because she's been with him before, and even if he is the most dangerous man in London, she might help him.

Might.

That means, she would have around 8 minutes or so left to help him,if she was already at the rooftop, hiding at the staircase and was waiting for Sherlock to jump. Running down the stairs while holding him wouldn't be easy, but if she had a stretcher? She could probably get him down in about a minute or so. After that, she would have to rush to get him to somewhere private in the hospital to save him.

That means 6 minutes left. After going to said private place might take 4 minutes,3 if Molly's lucky.

Another 3 minutes left. There's probably already a medical team there to treat him,so attaching all those machine things and such would take up a minute. Or two.

So that means he's barely survived.

But like the above quote, they need to get rid of the pressure. Of course,he would probably already have a blood bag or something,so blood loss is no longer an issue. They would have to get rid of gun debris and such and he would be fine in no time.

However, there's another factor to count, and that's the bullet and it's travel. Bullets that stay in the head and bounce around are more likely to cause death, but we've seen that the bullet goes through,so he has a more likely chance of survival. Handguns have low velocity, unlike army guns, which have high velocity.

Since the bullet didn't stay in his head,he has a higher chance of survival. Now,let's go to the travel.

Based on my observations, that bullet's going to just scrape (is that the right word?) the vital parts of the brain for vision and moving/thinking (like problem solving skills,or putting on clothes). But the most concerning part is that the bullet is going to go through the part where memory is located, the most.

That's a huge problem. Chances are,if Moriarty even survives,he won't be able to make new memories, make short-term memories,or the worst of all,he'll have amnesia.

Remember that Moriarty will still have his high level of intelligence even though he might have amnesia. Since he'll have amnesia, two years later,he might deduce who he was from people's reactions and such,or because of a certain Sebastian Moran who hasn't appeared yet,and he can continue his merry way on killing people.

Yeah. That was pretty long. And slightly complicated. Now,on to the final theory.

3) Moriarty Didn't Shoot Himself

Like all the other Sherlockians have been saying,he might have used that gas from Season 2,Episode 2,"The Hounds of Baskerville". The gas causes someone to hallucinate and see their biggest fear.

They also have speculated that if you listen closely to Moriarty's last moments, you can hear a spraying sound, similar to the one in "The Hounds of Baskerville" when the gas was released.

I'd like to say that about five minutes before Moriarty blew his brains out,he released the gas,and during that last moment,he released it once more just for good measure.

Since Sherlock would have been hallucinating,he would have seen Moriarty blow his own brains out and be startled. But why would his biggest fear be Moriarty?

Because Sherlock's biggest fear isn't Moriarty,it's losing all of his friends, and the only way for that to happen,is for Moriarty to kill himself.

So the hallucination would drive Sherlock to jump off the rooftop in order to protect his friends, and there,Moriarty would succeed. But having realized that Sherlock is still alive, presents himself to the world, ala hacking every single TV in Britain in Season 3.

This one is the most ridiculous way,to me,since Moriarty is the type who,"wants to put on a show," and therefore a person not to choose an easy plan. This plan would also have a high failure rate. What if Sherlock's biggest fear wasn't losing his friends? What if it was something entirely different?

Therefore, this theory is one that's not likely to be a reason for Moriarty surviving.

Since we all know about Moriarty being an asshat and not choosing the easiest way,and choosing the most "fanciest" and/or difficult way,Theory 1 is the most likely way he'd fake his death. Theory 2 would and could have the dangerous possibility of him dying or having amnesia, but he might try that one, too.

Well, that's one theory session done. If anybody has anything to say or add, please do so. :3
